Meet Mark Johnson: The Founder with Heart
Mark Johnson is more than the founder of The Bloom Group—he’s the heartbeat of everything we do. A proud Liverpudlian from West Derby, Liverpool but originally from Croxteth, Mark’s journey from a young entrepreneur to a respected business leader is nothing short of inspiring.
Growing up in Croxteth and attending De La Salle Catholic Secondary School, Mark admits he wasn’t the most focused student. But even back then, his entrepreneurial spirit shone through. From selling sweets, dinners, and bus tokens at school, Mark was always thinking ahead and finding creative ways to succeed. Mark massively respects young people with focus and goals and knowing exactly where they want to go in life. He admits he didn’t have that at the time but now has never been more determined and focused .
“School to me was a business opportunity,” Mark often says, a testament to his resourcefulness and determination.
A Journey of Hard Work and Vision
Mark credits his strong work ethic to his grandad, a coal merchant who taught him the value of discipline and smart decision-making. These lessons became the foundation of Mark’s success. By age 17, he was already investing wisely, building a financial future that would fund his wedding years later in 2009.
Mark’s first venture into property began with a small compensation claim in 2000, which he used as a deposit for his first buy-to-let property. That decision sparked a journey into property investment, culminating in ownership of 14 rental properties.
In the early 2000s, Mark began supporting his brother and sister-in-law in setting up Kids in Bloom, a nursery business that grew into a thriving enterprise with eight settings and over 120 staff. Today, Mark remains a director and shareholder, overseeing strategic and operational decisions and is still very involved.
A Leader Who Leads by Example
Mark’s philosophy is simple but profound: treat people how you want to be treated. He believes in leading from the front and by example. At Bloom or Kids in Bloom , there isn’t a single job Mark hasn’t done himself. Whether it’s cleaning, maintenance, or day-to-day operations, Mark understands the value of every role and respects the people who perform them.
He describes himself as inquisitive, curious, and someone who loves to challenge the status quo. “I’m not afraid to try the impossible,” he says, emphasizing his passion for testing theories and proving sceptics wrong. Mark still to this day touches wet paint to see if it wet. He is an explorer by nature.
Mark also values fairness, realistic expectations, and the belief that life is what you make of it and what you put in to it. "At 4 a.m., Mark’s already up, he says he’s 'getting a head start on the world' while the rest of us are still dreaming."
A devoted husband to Kalee and father of Zach, Jamie and Kellan, he finds balance in family life, running an under-8s football team, and being a proud Liverpool season ticket holder.
